Honterus, Johannes (1498-1549)
The leading priest of Brasso, the reformist of Transylvanian Saxons. AS a polihistor, he deal with a lot of branches of science and art: he was an outstanding wood cutter, he founded his own printing house in Brasso in 1539, the wooden decoration of which was made by himself. He provided high-quality school books for Tansylvanian schools. He published the works of ancient masters with educational puposes. He wrote a marvelous geography book in verse (Cosmographia, 1542), and the maps attached were cut into wood by himself. He played a great role in the organisation of the independent Transylvanian Saxon Lutheran church.
