Stöckel, Leonhard (1510-1560)

Evangelical writer from Bártfa. He studied in Wittenberg and had a close relationship with the leading characters of the German Reformation, Luther and Philipp Melanchton. After returning home he became the rector of Bártfa school, where he carried out school reform based on the German model. He regularly got involved in religious disputes with Protestants and Unitarians. He supported school drama classes and himself adopted the Biblical story of Susanna in a German language drama play. He sponsored the printing house of Bártfa where many of his works were printed after his death.
