hierarchy (Greek hiera arkhe, holy government)
The structure of ecclesiastic power, where owners were subordinated or co-ordinated to one another. The teaching of the Catholic church differentiates between two kinds of power: the power of orders (religious orders) and the power of government. According to this principle there is a hierarchy in the orders (bishop, confession priest, diaconus) and there is hierarchy in church government as well.
