cult

John of Capistrano
The ceremonies of a religious system, which include religious activities, objects and the people who take part in these ceremonies. During their formation Christian churches took over and re-evaluated many elements of old Pagan cults. Other elements survived in folk traditions. In Hungary mainly the Roman Catholic church provided the opportunity for the development of folk forms of religious cults. For example, local saints had their cults within a certain scope. Pictures, sculptures, and places of pilgrimage could also become the objects of cults. There could be a folk cult near a brook which - people believed - had the power to cure, or at places where people had visions.
