liturgy (Greek, Latin)

According to the original meaning "common work" (leiton ergon), the praise of God by the community of believers. In the legal sense liturgy means the services ordered officially. In case of Catholics liturgy contains the practice of the office (besides the service) including the melodies accompanying the text, as "the melody accompanying sacred texts is the a necessary part of the liturgy, which makes it complete". (The Second Synod of the Vatican, Liturgical Constitution, point 112)
