Szamosújvár (Gherla, Romania)

An important ducal castle in Transylvania, in the former Szolnok-Doboka county. Its construction was began by King János I around 1539-40; after his death, work continued first by György Martinuzzi Fráter, then by the Báthorys. The original plans of the castle were probably designed by an Italian military architect, perhaps Domenico da Bologna.
