gate tax

The Hungarian equivalent of the tax paid by non-Muslims (ispenje tax). Only those people were obliged to pay it who owned at least 300 akches worth of movable property. The sum of the gate tax was originally 50 akches, which had to be paid in two equal parts, on St George's day and on St Demetrius's day. Certain towns (Buda and Pest) and social groups (priests, judges) were exempted from paying the gate tax.
