water-mill
Mill structure driven by water power which can be used for grinding, crushing, husking, mushing, sawing and for the granulating of ore and minerals. Several versions of water-mills were developed such as stream- mills, river-mills or boat-mills that floated on water. It was the shovel-mill which utilised energy in the most simple way. More developed water-mills operated a mechanism that was able to adjust to the extremities of water direction. The common feature of the aforementioned mills was that the speed and direction of rotation could be changed by the application of cogwheels. According to need, mill structures were able to convert their rotating motion into a straight one. Supplementary structures which served the purpose of the operation of water-mills (canals, floodgates, water-basins) represented a high technical standard in village trade.
