glazed tile, stove-eye
These were different shaped elements made of baked clay, which put together created a fireplace or served the purpose of covering fireplaces. They could be glazed or non-glazed, a stove-eye or a stove-drawer. The earliest glazed tile in Hungary can be traced back to the 14th century. The most simple ones were the wheeled stove-eyes or stove-drawers. Apart from Italy, it was Hungary where glazed tiles were also made in the 1480's in Europe. A stove-eye is a mug-shaped, wheeled, non-glazed and narrow-bottomed glazed element.
