Melanchton, Philipp

Hus, Luther, and Melanchton
He was one of the first reformers in Germany, and Luther's friend and helper all through his life. He was the most outstanding figure of Protestant humanism. He was convinced that one can understand the essence of Christianity only if one had a deep classical education. He had a great influence on the first generation of Hungarian reformers with his way of thinking, individuality and his philosophical and theological views. The reformation of Latin schools in Germany was started under his lead, first in Nurnberg (1526). He was a great literary person, he wrote several grammar, rhetorical and dialectical school books, which were used for centuries in Europe, including Hungary.
