Alsted, Johann Heinrich (1588-1638)

A German writer, the representative of encyclopedism. He had taught at the Herborn university before he arrived in Gyulafehérvár with his son-in-law, Bisterfeld and Piscator. In Transylvania he taught philosophy, theology and languages. His Encyclopaedia published in Herborn in 1630 was a model for János Apáczai Csere. His Latin grammar was so popular in Hungary that it was republished 15 times. His philosophical and religious views had a great influence on Comenius.
