Comenius, Johannes Amos (Nivnic or Uhersky Brod, 1592 - Amsterdam, 1670)
One of the most significant writers and pedagogues of the first half of the 17th century. As member of the Czech Brotherhood's Association he studied at Herborn and Heidelberg universities. After a long stay in Germany, Britain, Holland and Poland, he arrived in Sárospatak by the invitation of Zsuzsanna Lorántffy and János Tolnai Dali, where he moved the Puritan intellectuals and reformed national education. He wrote several books on pedagogy, such as Orbis pictus (1653) and Schola ludus (1654), among others. His pansophic (aiming at omniscience) educational plans did not come to fruition, so he returned to Poland, from where he had to flee because of the events of the war. He went to Holland. He had a number of friends and followers in European towns - his influence was quite significant in Britain and Holland -, all of them were outstanding Protestant intellectuals.
