Maximilian, Lázár Schwendi, and György Thury
Backsword of György Thury
One of the legendary characters of the 16th century border fortress soldiery in Hungary. He began his career as an ordinary cavalry officer in the fortress of Ipoly and later gradually entered higher military ranks mainly as a result of his valour. He was the captain-general of the border fortresses of Léva and Palota, eventually of Kanizsa and the fortresses situated in the area between the river Dráva and Lake Balaton. He had a reputation as being a fearful fighter, and his valour made him famous country-wide. His last battle was also against the Turks in the spring of 1571, where he was ambushed near Kanizsa and died in a hopeless heroic battle against them.
