István Gyöngyösi (1629-1704)

Poem by István Gyöngyösi
He was a common nobleman, a lawyer and a writer. He was Palatine Ferenc Wesselényi's secretary, then he became the vice palatine of Gömör, and several times he was a representative of the county at the meeting of the parliament. He was a typical familiare, who wrote his works at the request and suggestion of his customers. He praised his customer and in return he was rewarded. His most important works are: The Venus of Murány talking to Mars (1664), Phoenix Rising from its Ashes, or ...János Kemény's memoirs (1665-1670, published in 1693), Weeping Nymph (on the occasion of the election of Pál Esterházy as palatine - 1681, published in 1685 under the title Palinoida), The marriage of Imre Thököly and Ilona Zrínyi (1683), Fraudulent Cupid (1695), Chariclia Born Again (1704).
