tanner
Master-craftsmen who processed leather and made simple types of footwear. In the Middle Ages those who made the shoes also processed the leather material themselves. In the case of tanners this meant the processing of white leather which was first aluminised in the oriental way. From the end of the 14th century, within tannery the leather processing stage became more dominant and a common practice. Later tanners became an opposition to shoemakers with whom they carried on a lawsuit for the rights of making bocskor, - the Hungarian moccasin. However, products of the oriental-style leather processing with alum and sumac still remained exclusively a tanner products: these were cordovan leather and the saffian.
