royal chancellery

Hungarian chancellor
Until 1526 this was the only organised office of Hungarian royal government, which dealt with all the cases requiring written records. After the battle of Mohács Maria Habsburg moved her residence to Pozsony, and organised her brother, Ferdinand's political policy from there. Tamás Nádasdy and Miklós Oláh - the outstanding literary figures of the age - were employed as royal secretaries for a short period of time. The great humanist, István Brodarics - ex royal chancellor - wrote the history of the battle of Mohács at the court of Queen Maria. Nádasdy and Brodarics later supported János Szapolyai. Besides king János there were lawyers such as the leader of his chancellery, the greatest lawyer of the age, István Werboczy.
