Demeter Náprágyi and the chapter of Győr

Győr, Bishop
Győr fell to the Turks only for a short time, for four years. During the 15-year war, in 1594 the Turks occupied it, but four years later Christian forces recaptured the fortress. Demeter Náprágyi was appointed bishop in the freed town, and was the representative and supporter of late renaissance literature and arts, he was also a famous collector of books and works of art. Besides Náprágyi the members of the Győr chapter formed a high-quality group of late humanist writers: canon Gergely Nagyfalvi excelled with his Latin poems, Tamás Balásfi, guard canon (custos) served the counter-reformation with his stoic humanist education. One of the most significant baroque poets, Mátyás Nyéki Vörös also rose from this group.
