Mossóczy, Zakariás (1542-1587)

Zakariás Mossóczy
A famous jurist, Bishop of Vác from 1578, then Bishop of Nyitra (Nitra, Slovakia) from 1583 until his death. His most important work was the chronological collection of Hungarian laws, known as the Corpus juris Hungarici, which he published in Nagyszombat (Trnava, Slovakia) in 1582. He had a very large library, a significant part of which forms part of the University Library of Budapest today. He was an avid collector of books and a knowledgeable patron of arts, which is best demonstrated by the excellent portrait engraving Martino Rota made of him. Several portraits of him were listed among the objects he left behind, one of these was carved from white marble. In the cathedral of Nyitra he had red marble tombstones erected for his predecessor, Bishop Pál Bornemisza and himself.
