These were the more or less free rewritings of biblical psalms, which was the most popular genre of the era: 277 pieces are known from the 16th century. The most beautiful ones were written by Bálint Balassi and János Rimay but beforehand the language of Hungarian psalms was polished by Mihály Sztárai, Gergely Szegedi, Máté Skaricza and lots of others.
