Beschlägwerk (German)

A type of ornament imitating the applied metal decoration that was originally used mainly on furniture. It was equally used in stone carvings, altarpieces, and prints. The plane of the ornament is parallel with the plane of the decorated object itself. The contour of the decoration consists of circular and ogee arches, in which raised nail heads and nail holes perforating the design are imitated.
