Bakócz Gradual

The two volumes of this gradual, a codex containing all the sung parts of the mass, was commissioned by János Erdődy or Simon Erdődy, both Bishops of Zagreb, for the St. Adalbert cathedral in Esztergom. The miniature decoration was carried out only as far the beginning of the first volume. Miklós Oláh, who donated it to the cathedral of Esztergom in 1556, had the illumination work continued in 1557, but even this work remained unfinished. The two enormous volumes are still preserved in the Cathedral Library in Esztergom.
