mitre
The headgear of a bishop, a major symbol of episcopate authority. It consists of two pointed parts, with two strips hanging in the back. The mitre of Pál Bornemisza is one of the most beautiful mitres of medieval origin in Hungary. Its front and back parts and the two ribbons are decorated by clusters of gems and enamelled metal beads and leaves on the edges, which date from the Angevin period. The interior metal structure that supports the mitre probably dates from the same time. The gem clusters appear as rosettes among the Renaissance vegetable ornamentation made from pearls. The coat of arms of Bornemisza with the swan and the date, 1550, can be seen of the metal plates at the end the strips (Gyõr, Cathedral Treasury).
