Tropheum

Pál Esterházy 2
László Esterházy 3
Duke Pál Esterházy intended to demonstrate the ancestry and illustriousness of his family by this volume, modelled on the Mausoleum of 1664 and richly illustrated with engravings. Because of the relatively new rise of his family into the high aristocracy, he was certainly in need of such a demonstration. According to the Tropheum, it was the brave deeds and high positions of the fictitious and real ancestors of the Esterházys, reaching all the way back to the tribal leader Örs, that laid the foundations for the fame of the family.
