the tombs of Queen Isabella and János Zsigmond

Tomb of Queen Isabella
Tomb of János Zsigmond
The two large tombs of white marble in the Várdai chapel of the cathedral of Gyulafehérvár (Alba Iulia) are covered by the same type of ornamentation: the Beschlägwerk and the Rollwerk are intertwined with branches that carry pointed leaves and berries. On the covers lie the effigies of the queen and the duke. The cover slab of Isabella's tomb is slanted. This tomb was also originally placed by the wall, while that of János Zsigmond could be walked around. The longer sides of both tombs were decorated by reliefs: the story of The Good Samaritan can be seen on Isabella's tomb, while the other is decorated by battle scenes. The workshop of the master who created these tombs has made other representative tombs in the cathedral; from these, however, only fragments have been found.
