the funerary monument of Kristóf Báthory
The monument was commissioned by István Báthory, King of Poland, in Gdańsk, from the workshop of Willem van den Blocke, which made numerous ducal funerary monuments in the Baltic region. The completed parts of the monument were mounted on a cart and transported to Gyulafehérvár, where they were assembled in the Jesuit church under the personal supervision of van den Blocke. The royal accounting books in Cracow have preserved the invoices for the long and tiring journey. The Cardinal András Báthory, Bishop of Varmia, also commissioned in 1598 funerary monuments for himself and his brother Boldizsár in Barczewo from Willem van den Blocke.
