Tencala, Carpoforo (1623-1685)

Kismarton, mural in the Esterházy château
Vöröskő, castle
Carpoforo Tencala, of Northern Italian origin, was the most significant fresco painter of the early Baroque period in the Habsburg countries: Bohemia, Moravia, Austria, and Hungary. His works have survived in numerous places from Prague, Passau, and Vienna to Kismarton (Eisenstadt, Austria) and Vöröskő (Červený Kameň, Slovakia). He often worked at places where construction was directed by Filiberto Lucchese, with whom he worked for his Hungarian clients as well. He decorated the rooms (the sala terrena and the ceilings of the chapel and the rooms on the upper floor) in the Pálffy's château in Vöröskő, and he created the fresco cycle in the festive hall of the Esterházy château in Kismarton.
