magister capellae

Singers paying attention to the music
Originally it did not mean a musical function, but referred to a high-ranking ecclesiastical person at the head of the capella. From Louis II's age in Hungary - similarly to other parts of Europe - it could refer to a musician, later it was the leader of court musicians. Although this person was the best and most skilful musician of the court, he lead the group from the point of view of music and administration as well, he was not a conductor, in today's sense of the word. This function was formed later.
