The words pipe and piper entered our vocabulary in the Middle Ages, as did the equivalent German Pfeife (Pfeifer) and Latin fistula (fistulator) words - which were primarily collective terms that referred to any kind of wind instrument and its player (including the bagpipe but excluding the trumpet type of instruments).
