net vault

A late Gothic vault form in which the ribs - in contrast with cross vaults - meet not, or not only in the keystone at the top of the vault, but also, or instead in other, lower points of junctions as well. A version of this type of vaulting with a complicated ground-plan where the net of the vault is repeated continuously and thus cannot be divided into sections, is called a net vault.

three-dimensionally curved ribs

A type of late Gothic ribbed vaulting, used especially in Central Europe, where the ribs curve both horizontally and vertically, that is, both on the cross section and ground-plan of the vault. This first version of this type of vault, which required highly developed design and stone carving techniques, was first used by Hans Puchspaum in the middle of the 15th century, then it was perfected by Benedikt Ried and Anton Pilgram around 1500.
