the royal treasurer, Demeter Nekcsei's Bible
Demeter Nekcsei of the Aba clan (†1338) was the royal treasurer of Charles I between 1315-1338.The King's successful economic policy was attributed to him. He was the one who ordered - probably towards the end of his life - the two-volume Bible from one of the best workshops of Bologne. This could be proved by the coat-of-arms painted in the book. A miniature in the codex - representing an offering of a church - refers to the fact that it was donated to a church, on the occasion of its foundation. Demeter Nekcsei founded a Pauline monastery at Csatár, to serve as his burning place. The Bible is decorated by its two cover pages and miniature before each prologue or book. The pictures must have been made by at least two artists, the text was copied by a scriptor, who arrived from beyond the Alps.
