trecento
In Italian it means three hundred. It is the art of the 1300s. Its starting point was the art of great Toscan and Roman artists: Giotto, the Pisans, Arnolfo di Cambio, Cavallini - who lived and worked at the turn of the 14-15th centuries. In the first half of the 14th century there was a close connection with French art, which was partly transferred by the papal court of Avignon (e.g. through Simone Martini). The two major cities of Toscana at the first half of the century were Florence and Siena. They played a very important role in the arts.In the middle of the century the cities of North Italy (e.g.: Padua) became important centers as well. At the aristocratic courts of these cities and in the aristocratic republic of Venice the influence of the international Gothic style was quite strong. In painting and sculpture the representation of reality and the following of antique models characterised the age. In architecture the use of huge inner spaces and rich surface decorations (in Toscana the colourful marble inlays, in North Italy moulded bricks) was general.
