domestication of animals (Latin domeastication)

The conquering Hungarians had already dealt with the domestication of animals. The bones of their animals differed from the those of the live-stock of other local people. After the Conquest keeping swine, poultry and cattle became more and more wide-spread. Dogs and cats were kept around the houses. The most important domestic animal was the horse, the flash of which was eaten by fewer and fewer people, because the church prohibited it. Nomadic grazing was followed by keeping animals in sheds or stables. This was shown by the growing size of animal bones.

There was wine-growing in the Carpathian Basin before the Roman occupation. The conquering Hungarians also dealt with wine-growing. The people who were engaged in wine-growing were called vinitors. The Latins, who came to Hungary in the 12-13th centuries, brought great changes in Hungarian wine-growing. They brought a more modern technology. In the 13-14th centuries the most popular Hungarian export product was wine. Hungarian kings supported the wine-growing and wine trade of towns with privileges.The best-known, best quality medieval Hungarian wine was the wine of the Szerémség.

long distance trade

Data from the 960s already refer to the long distance trade of teh Hungarian people. Hungarian tradesmen appeared in Prague and Bulgarian towns, they took part in slave and fur trade, and sold horses and silver. From the 12th century Hungarian tradesmen transported animals (horses) and salt abroad. Besides these they exported corn, fruits, wood, wood products, leather, fur, honey, fish, wax and meatals. Hungary imported weapons, products of handicraft industry and luxurious items. In the 143th century tradesmen came to Hungary from Venice, the Czech country, Poland, France, Geman and Austrian regions. In the 14-15th centuries this trade activity increased, they had connections with Florence, Wallachia and Moldavia. Hungarian kings supported long distance trade with staple rights and other privileges.
